New Jersey: Thousands of Palestinians celebrated the renaming of a busy highway in New Jersey, USA, to Palestine Road.
Yesterday, more than 5,000 Palestinians from different regions gathered in the American city of South Patterson to celebrate, waving their flags.
Patterson City Council held a ceremony in honor of the city’s large Palestinian community and business figures, renaming one of the main streets of South Petersen the Palestine Way.
A large number of Palestinian-Americans attended the event and cheered. To commemorate the occasion, singers performed on stage at the Maqda Street Festival and performed traditional dances.
The participants said that this event is the best effort to always remember the struggle of Palestinians abroad. They said that today’s event also shows that Palestinians are human beings, we are Americans and we will never forget this. Where we come from.
“I also remember the time when there were only a few dozen Palestinians living in the city and when their political influence was minimal,” said Awni Abu Ahadaba, a 72-year-old community leader who emigrated from occupied Palestine to South Patterson in 1971.
In this glorious event which took place on Sunday, while one side was celebrated, grief and anger were also expressed over a tragic incident. The audience paid tribute to the slain Al Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Qalah, who was shot in the head by Israeli forces last week.
