7:27 am: Gazprom suspected of having kept a gas tank empty in Germany

While the filling rate of gas tanks in Germany is 55% (see below), the Rehden tank, located in Lower Saxony, is worrying. Until the spring, the site was managed by the Russian energy company Gazprom. But Berlin suspects the group of deliberately keeping stockpiling low during the summer preceding the invasion of Ukraine, seeing it as leverage on Germany.

In April, the German government took control of this site and other strategic infrastructure owned by Gazprom in Germany. With a capacity of 4 billion m3, the Rehden reservoir, the largest in Europe, is currently only 7.95% full. On Tuesday, Berlin announced a rescue plan of several billion euros to avoid the bankruptcy of the former subsidiary of Gazprom and not to endanger the country’s energy security.
