War in Ukraine: at least three dead after Russian bombardments in kyiv, without water or electricity

kyiv was bombarded several times by Russian forces on Wednesday 23 November. The Ukrainian capital was left without water or electricity after these new strikes which also affected other cities in the country and caused power cuts to neighboring Moldova.

“Russian terrorists are trying to destroy Ukraine’s energy supply facilities. Today, explosions were recorded in various parts of the country”, lamented on Telegram the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidency, Kyrylo Tymoshenko. In total, Russia fired about 70 cruise missiles at Ukraine on Wednesday, 51 of which were shot down, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. After these strikes, Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine would request an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

Three disconnected nuclear power plants

“A two-storey building was damaged. Three people died and six were injured”, Kyiv regional administration said on Telegram, without giving further details. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said for his part that a “infrastructure site” was hit, announcing that the water supply had been “suspended throughout kyiv” because of the hits. The regional governor, Oleksiï Kouleba, announced to him that “the whole region” was “without light”.

In Lviv, in western Ukraine, two Russian missile strikes hit an electrical substation causing power cuts in two neighborhoods, according to Governor Maxime Kozytsky. Three Ukrainian nuclear power plants have been “disconnected” of the electricity network after these strikes, announced the national operator, Energoatom.

The last major strikes on kyiv date back to November 17, when the Russian army bombed several cities, including the capital, leaving more than ten million Ukrainians without power, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
