Ilia Topuria’s Featherweight Reign Met with Criticism and Controversy
There is a growing sentiment that Topuria (15-0) is not adequately defending his featherweight title. Critics, including legends like Alexander Volkanovski (26-3), accuse Topuria of avoiding fights without reason.
The reality, however, is that Topuria cannot defend his title at every event, or against any opponent. Additionally, the UFC has not offered him a fight prior to UFC 303.
Volkanovski recently spoke about Topuria on Fox Sports, expressing frustration with the Spanish-Georgian fighter’s apparent reluctance to accept challenges. According to Volkanovski, Topuria has been dismissive of opportunities to face top opponents, stating that he only wants to fight Conor McGregor.
Topuria’s reluctance to accept fights has led to criticism from fans and opponents alike. Volkanovski has accused Topuria of playing unfairly, saying that his lack of willingness to face top competition does not please the UFC or fans.
“Doing what Ilia did to me was huge. But then Max Holloway goes, wins the BMF… And challenges him. Then, suddenly, Topuria goes from being the king of the world to receiving negative comments,” Volkanovski said. “He doesn’t want to fight any of the best! Play bad, but don’t do it by saying you’re not going to fight anyone. That leaves a bad taste in the mouths of the fans. What he’s doing doesn’t please the UFC, I guarantee it.”
Topuria has not, in fact, avoided a fight with Holloway. Instead, he has expressed dissatisfaction with the terms of their potential matchup, feeling that it is unfair that Holloway does not offer to put his BMF title on the line.
