Veteran Tamil filmmaker V. Sekhar has passed away at the age of 72. He died in Chennai on Friday, following a period of ill health.
Sekhar had been unwell for several months leading up to his death. He was admitted to Sri Ramachandra Medical Center in Chennai on October 29. Hospital sources confirmed his demise around 6 PM on Friday evening.
He was widely recognized for his family entertainment films throughout the 1990s. Sekhar’s movies focused on relatable themes of middle-class life, often infused with humor and social commentary.
His storytelling resonated deeply with audiences, portraying everyday struggles and the warmth of family relationships. These narratives were always presented with an accessible and often humorous touch.
Among his notable works are ‘Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana’, ‘Kalam Maari Pochu’, ‘Veerappuukku Etha Veekam’, and ‘Oonna Irukka Kathukkanum’. These films continue to hold a special place among Tamil audiences.
The news of V. Sekhar’s passing has caused a wave of grief across the film industry, political circles, and among his many fans.
Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, a leader of the Paattaali Makkal Katchi (PMK), expressed his condolences on social media. He stated that Tamil cinema history is incomplete without Sekhar’s significant contributions. Ramadoss described his death as a major loss for the industry.

Senior film journalist Sreedhar Pillai also paid tribute to the director. Pillai remembered Sekhar as a prominent figure in 90s family entertainment, highlighting his unique skill in capturing middle-class emotions.
