Fortnite went dark early Wednesday morning. Epic Games pulled the servers offline to deploy the massive v40.10 update, triggering a wave of nostalgia across the global player base. This isn’t a standard patch. The developer is physically rolling the island back to 2019 to kick off “Fortnite OG Season 8.”
Matchmaking was disabled just before downtime officially began between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. ET, according to a detailed report on the status schedule. Based on historical maintenance windows, players can expect the servers to come back online between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. ET today.
The Island Reverts
In-game earthquakes recently tore through locations like Tilted Towers to set the stage for today’s geographic overhaul. The northeastern corner of the map is now a sprawling Jungle Biome. Classic Points of Interest are back. The Volcano brings bouncy, damaging lava to the island. Lazy Lagoon and the Aztec-inspired Sunny Steps also return to the map.
The loot pool is getting a massive 2019 refresh. Players will find Treasure maps and the Flint-Knock pistol. The iconic Baller vehicles will return soon. Epic also condensed the cosmetic grind into a new “OG Pass.” This battle pass features remixed variants of classic skins, including Lava Blackheart, Remixed Luxe, and the ninja lizard Hybrid 2.0.
The massive server infrastructure required to swap these map assets live remains a marvel in modern technology.
Why This Matters
The v40.10 patch files lay the groundwork for a massive licensing revival. On April 3, the Avengers: Endgame Limited-Time Mode will officially return to the game. This 16v16 Marvel mode tasks players with defending the Infinity Stones from Thanos and the Chitauri. It has been completely unplayable for seven years. Bringing back a highly specific Disney-licensed mode from 2019 proves Epic Games can successfully renegotiate massive legacy IP contracts to fuel its new nostalgia-driven release schedule.
