Definitely Valencia has a problem in the base position. Jones is the real benchmark. He does everything (19 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals) against Zalgiris (76-80) but he can’t play everything. Just when the match was being decided, he appeared exhausted, due to the effort made during the match.
Mumbrú cannot be blamed for an incorrect rotation. Van Rossom had to rest again and when Harper leaves, the team is disorganized, loses its essence and ends up depending on the success of the rookies in Europe. His anarchy forced the coach to lengthen Jones’ rotations and in the end it paid dearly.
Zalgiris spent the game crouching down, making the rubber. He took the lead for the first time (64-65) in the fourth quarter. And there he was superior to Valencia adding his sixth victory. Former Barcelona player Smits was the best (19 points and 7 rebounds) and Ulanovas, with his free kicks in the final seconds, finished off the Taronjas.
Valencia came out with another air. The taronjas got rid of the crisis in the middle of the match against Madrid on Tuesday. And although he did not give him a chance to overcome the whites, he did recover sensations. Besides, there was Jones today. And this is not a question anymore. With the American on the field, basketball flows. And his classmates play with another flow.
Holding on to the Jones-Webb-Dubljevic trio, Valencia punished Zalgiris from the start. Three triples in a row (two from Webb and one from Dubi) they launched at the locals. A basket by Rivero, after an offensive rebound, set the maximum until then (27-17). The free players and an irregular Harper, as usual, kept the Lithuanians at a close distance (31-24), at the end of the first act.
The anarchic game that Valencia becomes when Harper is at the controls made Mumbrú even give Radebaugh stripes, with Van Rossom out with a knee injury. But neither. Zalgiris closed to 31-29. And the coach had to pull a limping but essential Jones for Valencia. Things went to their place. Because the Lithuanians barely scored anything except free kicks. A 9-1 run put the maximum again for Valencia (40-30, min. 18). By then the party was already a guerrilla war. Zalgiris raised the intensity and Valencia equalized. Of course, the referees perhaps granted more free than due in the first two quarters to the Lithuanians: 18 for only 8 to Valencia Basket. Of course, two free kicks from Smits with a second left left it 44-37 at halftime.
After the break, Jones and Webb gave another growth spurt (50-40, min. 23). However, Smits (another who plays the game of the season against Valencia) and Brazdeikis signed a 3-11 run that brought them closer to 53-51. By then, Harper returned to lead Valencia Basket. A Russian roulette. The same thing scored a triple that lost a rude ball. It is clear that he is a newcomer to Europe but he cannot bring together the attacks of a team that by definition is choral. A triple from Arostegui once again gave Valencia a break but a horrible last minute turned into a 0-6 run that left Zalgiris within range (61-59) and with the arrow going up.
In the last quarter Valencia never flowed. With Jones already exhausted, it was Prepelic who rose from the dead and with a couple of trademark plays he kept his team in the game. A triple of his blew up La Fonteta (71-67, min. 35) despite the fact that it was palpable that gasoline was in reserve. From there, to another 0-9 run, with a stellar Cavanaugh, who turned the tables (71-76), with the ball for Zalgiris with only 1:25 remaining to go. Even so, Valencia fought for it, with the last atom of energy it had left. Two steals by Radenaugh and Claver together with two quick baskets put them within one point (75-76), with 25 seconds to go. The duel was played in free practice. Ulanovas scored all four he had, Jones only one.
