USA to semifinal thanks to Turner’s grand slam

Trea Turner hit a grand slam in the eighth inning that catapulted the United States to a 9-7 victory over Venezuela and the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic on Saturday night.

The Americans, the reigning Clásico champions, will meet Cuba on Sunday for a place in the final.

Trailing 7-5, the United States loaded the bases in the top of the eighth on a walk, a single and a pitch off José Quijada. Silvino Bracho came on in relief and Turner, the ninth hitter for the United States, missed a changeup on an 0-2 count. Turner’s drive traveled 407 feet to the stands behind left field.
