A recent operation led by the Customs Intelligence Group (GRIA) has resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of smuggled goods. It all began with the detention of a truck in Rocha, which was found to be transporting over 600 bottles of whiskey. This initial discovery was just the tip of the iceberg, as the investigation soon expanded to Montevideo. There, a jeep was located on Miguelete Street, containing additional drinks of irregular origin.
As the investigation continued, researchers made their way to a storage facility in Solymar, where they uncovered dozens of contraband alcoholic beverages. In total, the authorities seized over 1,500 bottles, valued at nearly two and a half million pesos. The merchandise was being stored for subsequent sale through social networks. One individual has been detained in connection with the case and is currently at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office.
In a separate incident, a routine inspection by Navy personnel in Fray Bentos led to the detection of smuggled goods in a Uruguayan-registered truck attempting to enter the country from Argentina. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the vehicle was hiding dozens of products, including champions, perfumes, and gel soaps, concealed in various parts of the truck, such as the fenders, glove compartment, and even the gearbox. The Prefecture was able to locate these hidden items, highlighting the creativity and cunning of smugglers. These two cases serve as a reminder of the ongoing issue of smuggling and the importance of vigilance in combating such activities.
