United States: in one month, 43 clinics have stopped abortions

At least 43 clinics have already stopped performing abortions in the United States, according to a study published on Thursday. These interventions have ceased since the decision of the Supreme Court to no longer guarantee the right of women to abortion on June 24th.

In the thirty days following this historic ruling, 11 states banned all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which campaigns for access to contraception and abortion. As a result, 43 clinics (23 in Texas, 5 in Oklahoma, 5 in Alabama) closed or refocused their activities on other care, according to the Institute’s study.

“Access to abortion will deteriorate”

The “Pink House”, at the heart of the case that led to the Supreme Court’s decision, closed on July 7 after having long been the only one to perform abortions in Mississippi. “Access to abortion, already very poor in a large part of the country, will continue to deteriorate,” the study indicates. “New states will adopt abortion bans in the weeks and months to come. »

Some states like Louisiana or North Dakota have laws prohibiting abortions, but legal battles have slowed their implementation. Others, like Indiana, have convened an exceptional parliamentary session to adopt new texts to this effect. Eventually, half of the states, especially in the conservative south and center, should ban abortions.
