Underwater drone searches for trapped miners

Mexican authorities will use an underwater drone to try to get more information from the coal mine in northern Mexico where 10 miners have been trapped for five days and which continues to be flooded.

Laura Velázquez, national coordinator of Civil Protection, said Monday during the morning presidential conference that this will not put the teams of divers, who have not yet been able to go down, at risk.

He added that with 25 pumps the flow of water extraction is being increased but that the flood, which had reached 34 meters, continues with between 17 and 26 meters of water depending on the wells.

The miners were trapped Wednesday afternoon in the municipality of Sabinas, in the northern state of Coahuila, when they came across an old mine that was filled with water and collapsed, causing flooding. Generally, in these wells, the miners usually work without maps of the area, which causes this type of accident to occur.

Of the 15 miners who were working at the time, five managed to get out and alert the authorities.
