UN extends mission in Haiti for nine months

The United Nations Security Council extended the UN mission in Haiti for nine months on Friday after China and potential Westerners reached a last-minute compromise.

The Council unanimously adopted a resolution extending the mandate for less than the year that Washington expected, but more than the six months that Beijing wanted.

The vote was cast shortly after 10:00 p.m. GMT, hours before the political mission, now extended until July 15, 2022, in a country mired in a crisis worsened by the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July.

Beijing made it clear that it would veto a one-year extension of the mandate.

The nine-month agreement involves an evaluation by the UN secretary-general at six months.

The BINUH (United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti) was established in October 2019, after the end of 15 years of UN law enforcement operations, and has been the subject of friction between Washington and Beijing.

His mandate includes strengthening political stability and governance on the island with strong US influence.

Diplomats have indicated that China wants to punish Haiti for recognizing Taiwan.

Earlier this year, the Security Council agreed to postpone elections in Haiti until the second half of 2022.
