Ukraine: what does the population expect from the meeting between Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin?

After his meeting with Vladimir Putin, which took place on Monday February 7, Emmanuel Macron will meet his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, tomorrow. Marc de Chalvron is in duplex from Tchemihiv in Ukraine for the 19/20H of France 3. He returns to the feeling of the Ukrainian population vis-à-vis this meeting in Moscow.

“Everything is good to lower the tension”, explains France 3’s special envoy to Ukraine, Marc de Chalvron. According to the journalist, the Ukrainian population is grateful for the initiative of Emmanuel Macron, who went today, Monday, February 7, to meet with Vladimir Putin to discuss the crisis in Ukraine.

But the mistrust of Ukrainians towards the Russian president is still very strong, while the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has lasted for almost eight years. “Negotiating with Vladimir Putin is like negotiating with a hostage taker“, confided to Marc de Chalvron a Ukrainian official. The Ukrainian population therefore hopes that the French president “is not too naive in his discussions with his Russian counterpart and above all that he will take into account the red lines of Ukrainee”, concludes Marc de Chalvron.
