The team from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) won the three games it played at the start of the preliminary round of the First Banreservas 2022 Baseball Cup held by the University Sports League with the participation of 14 higher education institutions.
In the first game of a double billboard, the Uasdian players defeated the team from the Technological Catholic University of Barahona (Ucateba) by knockout 11-0, thanks to timely hitting and masterful work from the mound by starter Carlos Báez Pineda, who allowed a single hit.
Lissandro Suero and Carlos Cancu had two hits for UASD, which also had the contribution of Báez Pineda himself, as well as Darvis Paredes, Ellian Amancio, Elvis Rojas and Wellington Almonte, who each had a single.
In the second match, the UASD team beat the O&M University team 5-2, commanded by a complete job by starter Juan Cuello, who scored two undeserved runs on him. The loser was fellow starter Steven De la Cruz.
The attack of the team of the Primate of America was led by Darvy Paredes, Miguel de la Cruz and Joaquín Henríquez.
The dominance of the UASD team was maintained in a third match, when they defeated Apec University 10-1 with the contribution of starter Raydin García, who pitched a complete match.
The whole of the state university dedicated its triumphs to the brand new rector of the UASD, Editrudis Beltrán, whose support was highlighted as well as that of the Vice President of Extension, Rosalía Sosa.
The playoffs
The baseball tournament of the University Baseball League is disputed by 14 teams divided into two groups. The second preliminary stage will be held on Saturday, July 30. The grand finale is scheduled to take place this coming September.
Next Saturday the UASD will face the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA) in its baseball field, in the morning, while starting at 2:15 in the afternoon it will play against the ninth of the Pedro Henríquez National University Ureña (UNPHU) in the stadium of this institution.
The Banreservas Cup aims to develop university baseball and thereby provide greater opportunities for Dominican baseball players.
