Two Haitians shot dead in restart of anti-government protests

At least two Haitians were shot dead and four ended up with injuries after an attack perpetrated by unknown individuals against protesters in Morne Lazarre, a popular district of the Pétion-Ville commune, according to the Haiti 24 portal.

These are the first fatalities recorded so far since the restart of the protests this Monday against the government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

The Haitian newspaper indicates that the perpetrators of the attack opened fire on demonstrators who were wandering around the area.

On the other hand, 25 people, including several women, were detained by the police authorities of the city of San Marcos, for their alleged participation in acts of looting and destruction of public and private property during the protests last week.

This report was provided by the Haitian National Police (HNP), as part of an initial evaluation of the latest events that shook that city during the protests.

According to the police entity, instructions have been issued and the appropriate measures have been taken to quickly regain control of the situation and continue to protect the life and property of the population.

The chief commissioner of Saint-Marc, Mathias Jean David, said that the police have recovered materials that have been looted by members of the population. "We have put in place a plan to recover various other materials"said.

The 25 people arrested are in custody at the Saint-Marc police station.
