Bamako: Unknown gunmen attacked a truck carrying civilians in central Mali, killing at least 31 people. It is feared that this attack on Saturday was carried out by jihadist terrorists. Hosseini Sai, mayor of Bandiajara, said the attack took place on Friday, about 10 kilometers from the city, when the truck was carrying about 50 passengers. Most of those who lost their lives in the attack were women who went to work in the market.

‘Most died of burns’

Mayor Hussaini Sai said: “The truck caught fire and 31 people died due to the shooting.” Most of the deaths were due to burns. Apart from this, many people were injured and two are missing. In early August, gunmen attacked several villages in northern Mali, killing at least 40 people in retaliation for the recent arrests of several jihadist leaders. The violence took place in the region affected by the violence near the borders of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, where extremists affiliated with the Islamic State group are active.

Terrorists call themselves jihadists
Local official Oumar Sisse said the attackers came between the Otagouna and Karau communities and identified themselves as jihadists. “Most of the victims were in front of their houses, others were going to the mosque,” he said. The attack comes a week after the Malian army arrested two jihadist leaders who were convicted by residents of Outagouna and Karau. Extremists have been a threat to the region for years. Jihadist rebels first captured cities in northern Mali in 2012, although they were soon driven out of the cities.
