The US announces a plan to evacuate its citizens stuck in Haiti

USA will organize one Charter flight for evacuate its citizens from Haitireported the Washington Embassy after weeks criminal gang violence in the Caribbean country.

The flight departs from Cap-Haïtien, Haiti’s second largest city, as the airport in the capital Port-au-Prince remains closed.

“We are organizing a charter flight for U.S. citizens from Cap-Haïtien to the United States, provided the security situation in Cap-Haïtien remains stable,” the embassy reported in a security alert posted on its website Saturday.

The diplomatic mission did not give the date of the evacuation and it was not clear how many Americans could leave.

The embassy warned that land travel from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haïtien was “dangerous” and advised its citizens to consider flying “only if they believe they can arrive safely at Cap-Haïtien airport.”

Both cities are 200 kilometers away.

Haiti is the scene of an outbreak of violence by criminal gangs who have banded together to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, an unpopular leader who was not elected through elections.

The leader, in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, announced his resignation in the early hours of Tuesday after days of international and local pressure.

The small Caribbean nation is now waiting for an interim presidential council to be appointed until new elections are held. AFP
