The Turkish Parliament has ratified Finland’s NATO membership.

Turkey’s parliament has approved a bill to allow Finland to join NATO, removing the last major obstacle to Finland joining the NATO defense alliance.

All 276 lawmakers in the Turkish parliament have voted in favor of Finland’s bid. A few days ago, the Hungarian Parliament also ratified the accession of Helsinki.

Recently, Turkish President Erdogan announced that Turkey will support Finland’s NATO membership and Turkey will approve Finland’s NATO application.

This decision was made at a time when Finnish President Sauli Niinisto came to Ankara to meet Erdogan. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden have applied to join the NATO bloc.

“We have seen that Finland has taken authentic and concrete steps when it comes to fulfilling its commitments in the tripartite memorandum of understanding,” Erdogan said at a news conference in Ankara after meeting with Niinisto.

All 30 NATO members have accepted their requests and 28 have ratified their accession, but only Turkey and Hungary have not yet done so.

Turkey has vetoed Finland and Sweden. Ankara had signed a protocol with the two countries, which is a pledge not to openly support organizations that Turkey has designated as terrorists.
