The Supreme Court will rule on Trump’s presidential immunity in the 2020 election interference case

The U.S. Supreme Court will debate in late April whether former U.S. President Donald Trump enjoyed presidential immunity as part of the federal case against him for attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.

The Supreme Court accepted the legal challenge this Wednesday and will therefore hear the parties’ arguments on whether the former president enjoys presidential immunity “from criminal proceedings for conduct alleged to be official acts during his term in office,” it says the judgment. , NBC News reported.

The decision amounts to at least a short-term victory for Trump, as the case could be delayed until the summer or even after the November presidential election, in which the former president is running as the favorite within the Republican Party.

Trump has based much of his defense on the fact that as president he cannot even be investigated in the cases opened by special counsel Jack Smith. According to the former president, his movements fell within his official powers.

The tycoon is facing a sum four federal indictments for alleged election fraud, particularly conspiracy against the United States; prevent Congress from certifying the results of the elections; conspiring against the right to vote and trying to prevent the certification of the minutes.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all four counts last August. Prosecutors argue that Trump manipulated protesters by making them believe then-Vice President Mike Pence could change the outcome of the election, which ultimately led to the attack on the Capitol on January 6th.
