The migrant caravan agrees with the Mexican Government on its regularization

Representatives of a migrant caravan, which is traveling through Mexico to the United States, reached an agreement this Thursday with the Ministry of the Interior (Interior) to regularize its nearly 500 members and allow those who wish to continue their route to the north. .

"Our demands have been met 100%"Irineo Mujica, an activist from Pueblos Sin Fronteras who accompanies the caravan and who was present at the meeting, told Efe.

In statements to the press, Rabindranath Salazar, Undersecretary of Democratic Development, Social Participation and Religious Affairs of the Ministry of the Interior, indicated that now it is everyone’s turn to comply with the agreement that is "based on law".

The Mexican government will send a delegation to carry out a census at the Casa del Peregrino, in Mexico City, where the migrants have been since they arrived in the capital last Sunday.

According to the participants, the needs of each person will be addressed individually and priority will be given to the almost 100 children who are in the shelter.

In addition, the Mexican authorities have promised to meet again with the caravan on January 17 to monitor compliance with the agreements.

The caravan, mostly from Central America and Haiti, arrived shortly before noon at the agency’s facilities in this capital after making a stop at the National Palace and the Mexican Senate.

Members have constantly asked to be granted permanent residences and to allow passage to those who wish to continue their route to the United States.

The group set out on October 23 from the city of Tapachula in the southern state of Chiapas, bordering Guatemala. When they left the town, the caravan numbered in the thousands.

However, as the days passed, the number decreased. Migration agents have been approaching in recent weeks to offer humanitarian visas, something that has caused many to abandon the route.

Since its arrival in Mexico City, the activity of the caravan has been intense. Last Wednesday they met with the president of the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), Rosario Piedra.

Mexico is experiencing one of the largest migratory waves in its history. From January to October, the country has intercepted 228,115 people and deported another 82,627, figures that had not been seen for more than 15 years.

Similarly, refugee applications have also broken records. From January to October, the country has received 108,195 petitions.
