The spokesman for the jihadist group, Abu Omar al Muhajir, assured that the leader was assassinated “fighting the enemies of Allah”, without giving further details about the circumstances or the date of his death.

Al Muhajir said that a new “caliph of the Muslims” was immediately appointed, Abu al Hussein al Husseini al Qurashithe fourth leader of the jihadist organization to be listed among the “former mujahideen” (Islamic fighters) of the group.

The US military command in the Middle East specified that Abu Hassan al Hashimi al Qurashi died in mid-October in the province of Daraa, in southern Syria, at the hands of rebels from the Free Syrian Army.

The IS conquered large territories of Syria and Iraq in 2014, but its self-proclaimed caliphate fell after two offensives in 2017 and 2019. The jihadist organization extended its influence in other regions such as the Sahel zone., Nigeria, Yemen or Afghanistan.
