France inspires Jonas Vingegaard. The two-time Tour champion won this Friday in the mythical Tourmalet to the top of the Jumbo Visma exhibition. The Dutch team finished with Sepp Kuss in the second and Primoz Roglic in the third; just as it occupies the first three of the classification, in this case with Kiss wears the red jersey and with Roglic in second place. It was the culmination of a hectic day that dashed the hopes of the yellow reels’ main rival, Remco Evenepoel.
Evenepoel burst in the first major port of the 2023 Vuelta a España. He didn’t even have the opportunity to reach the star mountain of the route, the Tourmalet, the finish point of this edition’s queen stage. Number 1 said goodbye to his title much earlier the Aubisque, 90 kilometers from the finish line. The fall forces us to reflect on the Belgian phenomenon. Today only unknown people surround him. Is Remco really a driver for big laps? Can anyone deny that? Last year he won La Vuelta, But it is no less true that this route was much less demanding than the current one, but rather was tailored to it. The second part of this question is whether he will ever be able to compete for the Tour. Symbolically, abandoning the Aubisque, on the same Pyrenean roads that make the French Ring so great, increases this uncertainty.
There have been several climbs at the 2023 Vuelta so far, but none with the tires packing this 13th stage in the Pyrenees. In fact, it was this Friday the first real big mountain day, which suggested that the general classification would undergo important clarification. Nobody expected that Evenepoel would be the main victim. The Belgian got off the first colossus of the day, which had also left another candidate, João Almeida. Next climb, Spandelles, left injured Lenny Martinez, although this was more predictable. Then the tourmalet put in the clinch.
Evenepoel, supported by his sociable Soudal people, crowned the Aubisque about a minute and a half ahead of the group of red jerseys. It was the beginning of the end, but there was still hope to cushion the blow. The Jumbo moved ahead, but without giving it its all. Then an unexpected guest took the lead, Bahrain, which was preparing an attack for Mikel Landa, who came to roll alone at the top Sepp Kuss and Jonas Vingegaard, in addition to his partner Antonio Tiberi. The beginning Landist60 kilometers away did not bear revolutionary fruit, but it did the final touch for Remco. Also for Almeida. It was a remarkable day for the Basque, finishing seventh in the stage and a total of four places ahead of the previous day. Landa closes it Spanish quartet this second the Jumbo in the ranking. Juan Ayuso, fourth with 2:37 minutes, leads this chase.
After the Belgian was eliminated, the rest of the trip was led by him the jumbo locomotive to the final exhibition. Vingegaard, the lowest Dutchman, started first eight kilometers away, looking for a victory that he could dedicate to his daughter on her birthday. Kuss acted as scribe with Enric Mas before setting off alone in the wake of his colleague. AND Roglic completed the podium on the final banner, his specialty after enduring suffering the climb to the Tourmalet. After his victories at the Giro and the Tour Jumbo gets his La Vuelta victory back on trackhis third big one. From triplet to triplet.
