Dominican Teoscar Hernández hit a home run, two doubles and a single; Danny Jansen drove in five runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays moved closer to winning the first wild card in the American League by shredding the Boston Red Sox 10-0 on Saturday.

The Blue Jays entered the day on top of the three wild-card races, 1 1/2 games ahead of Seattle.

Ross Stripling (10-4) and four relievers combined to allow four hits as Toronto shut out Boston for the second straight day. The Blue Jays beat the Red Sox 9-0 on Friday.

Jansen homered, doubled and singled, while Bo Bichette went 4-for-4 as Toronto began October with 21 hits before a sellout crowd of 44,612.

The Blue Jays are 15-3 against the Red Sox this season and tied their record for most wins against the same opponent in a season. Toronto went 15-4 against Baltimore in 2002 and again in 2010.

Toronto’s 15 wins against Boston are the most by any divisional rival in the American League this season. Houston has won 14 of 19 games against Texas.

Brayan Bello (2-8) gave up two runs and a career-high 10 hits in four innings.

For the Red Sox, Puerto Rican Enrique Hernández 3-0.

For the Blue Jays, Dominican Otto López 1-1, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 4-1 with an RBI, Teoscar Hernández 5-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs, Raimel Tapia 4-2 with two runs scored and one RBI . Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno 1-1 with a run scored.

Sailors 5; Athletics 1

Luis Castillo struck out eight and allowed two hits in six innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Saturday, a day after earning their playoff berth.

Now, Seattle’s mission is to overtake the Toronto Blue Jays to host the wild-card series at home.

Castillo (8-6) retired 16 straight batters to help the Mariners win for the fourth time after two poor starts in which he allowed nine earned runs. The right-hander settled in after quickly giving up two hits and giving up a first-inning walk to trail 0-1 — 12 hours after Seattle clinched its first postseason berth in 21 years.

On an RBI single by Jordan Diaz, Tony Kemp scored after he singled on Castillo’s first pitch. But the Dominican recovered and struck out Conner Capel to end the inning. It was flawless the rest of the day.

The Mariners rested most of their key starters after securing the wild card, ending the longest playoff drought in professional sports in the United States.

For the Athletics, Puerto Rican Vimael Machín 4-0. Dominican Dermis Garcia 2-0. Colombian Jordan Díaz 2-1 with an RBI.

For the Mariners, the Dominican Carlos Santana 4-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
