Suspect of attack on Turkish embassy in New York arrested

The suspect in the attack on the Turkish diplomatic headquarters in the United States was arrested.

According to international media reports, the police have detained a man who is accused of attacking the Turkish diplomatic headquarters in New York and breaking its windows.

The arrest comes after condemnation from the US and Turkish authorities. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this week called on US authorities to find the culprit, calling him a "”Terrorist” should be declared.

The New York Police Department identified the suspect as Rajab Akbek, 29, in an email to Al Jazeera.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspect has been charged with attempted theft, criminal possession of a weapon, terroristic threats, criminal acts and threats.

Turkish news agencies previously reported that Akbek is a Turkish citizen who left Turkey a year ago. His motives are unclear.

Footage shared by Turkey’s state news agency Anadolu Agency shows a man dressed in black and wearing a hat damaging the glass facade of the building early Monday morning.
