South African club Mamelodi Sundowns secured a commanding 5-1 away victory against Nigeria’s Remo Stars on Sunday, positioning them for an almost certain progression to the group stage of the African Champions League.
The dominant win gives the Mamelodi Sundowns, coached by Portugal’s Miguel Cardoso, a significant advantage heading into the second leg of the qualifying round.
Goals for Sundowns came from Mathews in the 12th minute, followed by Shalulile in the 42nd. Portuguese player Miguel Reisinho added a third goal in the 61st minute.
Arthur Sales extended the lead to 4-0 in the 75th minute. Remo Stars managed a consolation goal from Olasupo two minutes later.
Ntsabeleng sealed the comprehensive 5-1 victory for the visitors in the 85th minute.
In another qualification match, Morocco’s FAR Rabat, led by coach Alexandre Santos, played to a 1-1 draw against Horoya in Guinea.
Sylla opened the scoring for Horoya in the 22nd minute. Khabba then equalized for FAR Rabat in the 62nd minute.
This result leaves the tie open for the second leg. The return match is scheduled for October 25 in Rabat, Morocco.
