Sumona Chakravarti’s absence from “The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show” has left fans wondering. She was a crucial part of the show, playing the role of Kapil’s wife and making people laugh. Although no one has replaced her, her absence is still felt.
In an interview with “The Indian Express”, Sumona revealed that she hasn’t watched the show since it shifted to OTT platforms. However, she clarified that there was no “breakup” with Kapil. She said, “We had a wonderful 10-year journey on different networks. Most marriages don’t even last that long, but our on-screen marriage worked.”
Sumona explained that the team would take breaks every year around June-July. The last season ended in 2023, and then Kapil went on a US tour. After that, she heard he was moving to Netflix. “Honestly, there was no discussion between us about it. It’s not like we stopped talking,” she said.
Sumona on the Show’s Popularity
Sumona believes that the show’s popularity stems from its audience. “I’ve learned that work and home life should be separate. Otherwise, my life would be complicated,” she said. People enjoy the show because it’s for the common man, the lower-middle class, and not just limited to cities like Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore. She added, “I see people watching the show on YouTube and SonyLIV, even in airports and flights. Sometimes, I hear my voice and realize someone is watching our episode. It’s always going to be like that.”
The Scripted Nature of the Show
When asked about the show’s tendency to make fun of women and use derogatory language, Sumona said, “It’s a show! It’s a scripted show! I really believe, and I’ve always told those who’ve asked me, it’s just acting. It’s just a TV show. Kapil is not insulting me; there’s a difference between the character and reality.” She emphasized that the show is meant to entertain and not be taken seriously, with a clear distinction between what’s real and what’s part of the act.
