Spanish Basketball Celebrates Fourth Podium in U17 Women’s World Championship
The Spanish U17 women’s basketball team has secured the bronze medal in the World Championship, defeating France 47-39 in the bronze medal match at the León Fair Dome in Mexico. This is Spain’s fourth podium finish in the tournament, following three silver medals and one bronze.
Spain’s team, led by Javier Torralba, bounced back from a tough semi-final loss to Canada, which ended 73-77. The Spanish team showed a strong defense in the second half, limiting France to 10 or fewer points in the last three quarters.
Three players stood out for Spain, scoring most of the team’s points. Inés García Monje led the way with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals, and 4 assists. Leyre Urdiain added 14 points and 9 rebounds, while Mireya Sanz scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
USA Dominates the Competition
The United States, which has won seven podiums in the history of the Championship, dominated the competition, taking the gold medal from Mexico 64-84 in the tournament final. The USA’s Sara Okeke was selected to the tournament’s All-Star quintet alongside Agot Makeer, McKenna Woliczko, Ainhoa Risacher, and MVP Jerzy Robinson.
