Spain’s 2025 World Cup Bid Falters Following Disappointing Loss to Wales

Spain moves away from the 2025 World Cup after a painful defeat against Wales

World Rugby Rankings: Spanish Women’s Team Falls to Wales, Relegated to WXV3

The Spanish women’s rugby team, also known as the Lionesses, suffered a disappointing second half against Wales, leading to a 52-20 defeat at the Cardiff Arms Park. The loss has relegated Spain to the WXV3, the third division of the world competition, and they will have to wait for the next opportunity to reach the 2025 World Cup in England.

Spain started strong, with Amalia Argudo opening the scoring with a penalty kick and two tries by Inés Antolínez and Claudia Grief, with Sharp converting two of the tries. However, the Lionesses struggled to maintain their momentum in the second half, with Wales gradually gaining the upper hand.

Wales’ Caris Cox and Georgia Evans scored tries, both converted by Bevan, which ultimately decided the match. Cox scored two tries, while Jenny Hesketh added the final result, as Spain’s offense sputtered in the second half.

Despite a promising start, the Spanish team’s performance in the second half was marred by mistakes in handling, a lack of offensive ideas, and errors in decision-making, which allowed Wales to capitalize on their opportunities.
