Spain bets on “big data” to become a smart tourist destination

España apuesta al "big data" para volverse un destino turístico inteligente

Spain will bet on "big data" as a way to increase tourist attraction, with the creation of a large smart tourist destination platform that will allow managing the entire experience for visitors, revealed the mayor of Salamanca, Carlos García Carbayo.

As part of the visit that the Spanish delegation is carrying out these days through Mexico, they were in the city of Querétaro, in the center of the country, where they presented the Spanish destinations to local tour operators, announcing the creation of this platform that, he assured, will mark a before and an after in Spanish tourism.

“Right now we are developing a large smart tourist destination platform that will allow us to manage the entire experience of tourists who come to visit the world heritage cities in Spain, from the moment one begins to think about where to go on vacation, to who are already there enjoying them”, he detailed.

Through this platform, he added, tourists will be able to manage their hotel reservations, cultural establishments and hotels and municipalities will be able to better understand what tourists are looking for in their destinations and adjust their offer to demand.

“This can be done on this platform that the Government of Spain is promoting with the world heritage cities and all cities want to benefit from that (…) from a great platform from which different applications and also web pages will be taken, It is a complete change in the management of the tourist offer”, he added.

García Carbayo highlighted that during the more than two years that the covid-19 pandemic has been present in the world, Spain has not been exempt from the impact of the confinement and restrictions imposed by national governments. However, he stressed that the tourism model of heritage cities is so successful that it has managed to recover from the blows of the pandemic.

In addition, he said that they are currently at the levels they had in 2019 in terms of national tourism, while in international tourism they are at 65% recovery.

He acknowledged that, despite the fact that January and February are months that traditionally represent a drop in visitors, this year tourism has skyrocketed again, so this intelligent platform will mark "one before and one after"since it will allow to offer an experience closer to the interests and desires of the visitors.

“It will be a milestone in tourism management between our cities and we hope to share it with Mexico. (It will be) for these 15 Spanish cities, for traditional beach destinations. There are three blocks and the third block is the great Spanish inland destinations”, he asserted.

For her part, the Secretary of Tourism of the municipality of Querétaro, Alejandra Iturbe Rosas, recognized that there are many things to learn from Spain, since it is one of the favorite tourist destinations in the world, hence the importance of sharing experiences and good practices. with the Spanish cities.

“We are 14 heritage cities in Mexico and that they have chosen Querétaro for us is very important and they chose it, obviously, because of the privileged location that we have in the center of the country, because of the tourist offer and because they saw the business opportunity that can be generate here, which can be very attractive for the Spanish market”, he concluded.
