Shenzhen Customs Nabs Two Women Smuggling 68 African Turtles Under Skirts

Chinese customs officials recently intercepted two women attempting to smuggle 68 African dwarf mud turtles into the country by strapping the reptiles to their legs beneath their skirts, an unusual method highlighting the persistent illicit trade in exotic animals.

The arrests occurred at the Wenjindu Customs Port in Shenzhen, a bustling border crossing in southern China. Officials grew suspicious of one female passenger who was walking with an unusually stiff gait.

A subsequent search revealed 39 live turtles strapped to her thighs. She had used black leggings to conceal the animals under her skirt.

Just five minutes later, another woman exhibiting similar unusual movement was stopped. She was found to be carrying an additional 29 turtles hidden in the same manner.

All 68 reptiles were identified as African dwarf mud turtles (Pelusios nanus). This species is not naturally found in China, making it an alien species to the region.

The case has been transferred to Shenzhen’s anti-smuggling department. Authorities will now proceed with legal action against the individuals.

Shenzhen customs officials reported the arrests on October 27, 2025. The incident underscores ongoing efforts to combat the smuggling of exotic wildlife.
