Security Council in India: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has backed India for a permanent seat in the Security Council, describing India as a major international player. “The Council and the United Nations have to adjust to contemporary realities,” he said at a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on Saturday. “We see the potential to make the Security Council more democratic by broadening the representation of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America,” he said. He specifically mentioned the addition of India and Brazil as key international players and eligible candidates for permanent membership within the Council.

Russia openly supported for the first time

Russia supported India’s candidature. This is the first time that the country has publicly done this. India is the only country that has the support of all three Western permanent members and Russia. Which is equal to the support of all permanent members except China. Brazil does not have the support of the US, while Germany and Japan, which are frontrunners for permanent seats, do not have the support of Russia.

Lavrov criticized the US Indo-Pacific strategy as an attempt to subjugate Asian countries and undermine ASEAN. India is involved in the Indo-Pacific strategy as a member of the Quad, a grouping of four countries, which also includes Japan and Australia. “Closed drafts are being created under the slogan of Indo-Pacific strategies and they undermine what has been built on ASEAN over the decades,” he said.

America trying to drive the whole world behind

NATO has now declared the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific as ‘indivisible’. The US, he said, is trying to put the whole world behind it, and the West is presenting a dividing line everywhere on the lines of confrontation between the bloc. “You are either with us or against us, no third option is possible, there is no compromise,” he said. He reiterated President Vladimir Putin’s harsh stance against Ukraine. He said that the rights of the Russian-speaking minority in Ukraine are restricted and President Volodymyr Zelensky, provoked by the West, triggered a confrontation, to which his country responded.
