The global smartphone market experienced a sharp 9% drop in sales volume during the second quarter of 2022. According to the latest data from the analysis agency channelsthe number of units sold was significantly reduced compared to the same period in 2021. A total of 287 million smartphone units were sold at the end of June 2022. First we have Samsung with 61.8 million smartphones sold with a market share of 21%. In second place is Apple with 49.5 million units and 17% of the market. Soon in third place is Xiaomi with 39.6 million devices sold.

Right after fourth place, OPPO took fourth place, while Vivo now ranks fifth in the global smartphone market. In other words, although there was no change in the global Top 5, the volume of units sold was significantly lower compared to last year’s sales figures.
The manufacturer that lost the most in sales volume was the market leader, Samsung. In fact, the South Korean giant would register a 16% drop in sales during the analyzed period compared to the previous quarter. However, the same Samsung recorded a 6% increase in sales volume compared to the same period last year, the second quarter of 2022.

The reasons for this are related to the difficulties of maintaining the stocks, particularly in the mid-range segment. There, the manufacturer continues to promote its Galaxy A range more aggressively to boost sales of its more affordable mobile phones. However, the Galaxy S22 range also posted good sales in the global market.
Apple remains comfortably in second place, thanks to strong demand for its iPhone 13, especially in North America, China and Europe.

Then we have the various Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo, closing the Top 5. Among them, they felt the impact of the forced quarantines in the domestic market and other restrictions on the movement of people and goods in China. For example, OPPO reduced its market share from 11% to 10%. Vivo, meanwhile, fell from 10% to 9% in the same period.
Looking at Xiaomi, the drop was more pronounced, going from 17% market share to 14%. That is, it lost 3 percentage points during the analyzed period.
Finally, it remains to be seen how the market will behave during the 3rd quarter of the year, between the beginning of July and the end of September 2022.
