Saber Interactive’s executive, Matt Karch, recently shared his thoughts with Game File about the Saints Row reboot, which was released in 2022, and criticized the now-defunct Volition team. According to Karch, Volition lacked a clear vision for the game, and the poor reception of the Saints Row reboot had a significant impact on the franchise. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of Saints Row, Karch doesn’t expect a new installment to be released anytime soon, given the disappointing response to the latest game.
“They didn’t know what they were building, and they didn’t have a clear direction for the game,” Karch said. “It’s not the end of Saints Row, but who’s going to invest in a new game after the last one was such a disaster?” This statement highlights the challenges that the franchise is currently facing, and it’s unclear what the future holds for Saints Row.
Karch also commented on the current state of the gaming industry, stating that the era of companies investing heavily in multiple games outside of the GTA series is over. Many game developers need to find new ways to keep their companies growing, and Karch bluntly stated that layoffs are sometimes a necessary measure to ensure a company’s survival, even if it’s not a desirable decision.
The Saints Row reboot was one of the most disappointing games of 2022, both for players and reviewers. Embracer Group had previously acknowledged that the game’s sales did not meet expectations, and the fan base’s reaction to the game was not overwhelmingly positive.
