Russia reacts to Putin's arrest warrant

The Kremlin rejected the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue an arrest warrant for the Russian president over alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

The Kremlin says it does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant against Putin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the questions raised by the ICC to Russia "provocative and unacceptable” and that any decision of this court about Russia "null and void”.

Asked whether Putin is now afraid to travel to countries that recognize the ICC? So Peskov said, I have nothing more to say on the subject.

The court said in the statement that Putin is allegedly responsible for the war crime of illegal deportation of population (children) and illegal transfer of (children) from the occupied territories of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

There was no immediate comment from Russia following the ICC’s move on Friday. Russia has denied committing atrocities since its invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

The court also issued an arrest warrant for Maria Alekseevna Lova-Belova, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights at the headquarters of the Russian Federation, on the same charges.
