Eric Haase hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning and the Detroit Tigers held on for a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
It was Haase’s fifth home run of the season and his second in the last three games. Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera also produced runs for the Tigers, who dropped his road record to 11-23 after splitting the two-game series.
Rony Garcia (3-2) won his third straight start for Detroit, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Gregory Soto retired in order the ninth for his 15th save in 17 chances.
Evan Longoria homered in the first inning for the Giants, his eighth of the season, but San Francisco couldn’t capitalize on their chances. The Giants left nine runners on the trails.
San Francisco starter Alex Wood (5-7) struck out six in 5 2/3 innings, but gave up three runs and seven hits to carry the backhand.
For the Tigres, Puerto Rican Javier Báez 4-2 with two runs scored. Venezuelans Miguel Cabrera 3-1 with an RBI; Victor Reyes 3-2. The Dominican Jeimer Candelario 4-0.
For the Giants, the Venezuelans Thairo Estrada 4-0; Wilmer Flores 1-0.
