Roland Garros: Etcheverry shone and is already in the third round

The Argentine tennis player Tomás Etcheverry completed his best performance in a Grand Slam this Thursday when settling in the third round of Roland Garros, after winning over Australian Alex De Minaur by 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-3, while his compatriot Pedro Cachín was eliminated and could not secure an albiceleste cross in the next phase.

Etcheverry, born in La Plata and ranked 49th in the ATP world ranking, defeated De Miñaur (19) at full power after two hours and 45 minutes of play on court number 14 of the complex located in the Parisian neighborhood of Bois de Boulogne.

The 23-year-old Argentine will play his next match in the third round against the Croatian Borna Coric (16), who eliminated the Cordovan Pedro Cachín (64) after defeating him in a tough match 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4 after a battle on court number 6 that lasted for four hours and 24 minutes. The only precedent between Etcheverry and Coric was last year in the Italian Challenger in Perugia with the victory of the Argentine in the quarterfinals by 6-4 and 6-3.

Etcheverry, who is going through the best year of his career after being a finalist in two ATP, in Santiago, Chile, and Houston, United States, he improved on his best performance in a Grand Slam which had been the second round of the Australian Open last February.

The man from La Plata had made his debut at Roland Garros with a victory over the British Jack Draper (55) and with his success against De Miñaur he became the second Argentine in the third round, after it was achieved by Diego Schwartzman (95) on Wednesday.

“It’s an incredible feeling. I prepared for this, I came looking for it and I think I played a great match.”, the La Plata commented exultantly after his victory. “It was difficult for me to close the second set, but having won that tie break gave me the necessary confidence, then I let go and played better”, added the Argentine, who will take on his next challenge against Coric.

The activity for the Argentines in Paris continued with the matches of Guido Pella and Thiago Tirante, who were eliminated. The man from Bahía fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-3 against the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (172), while the player from La Plata lost 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and 6-4 against Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (71). Later they will complete Francisco Cerúndolo against the German Yannick Hanfmann (65) and Genaro Olivieri (231) against the Italian Andrea Vavassori (148).
