Roland Garros: Cerúndolo and Etcheverry go for a place in the quarterfinals

The Argentine tennis players Francisco Cerúndolo and Tomás Etcheverry will play this Monday for a place in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the season, in which this Sunday the number one in the world, the Serbian, advanced to that instance. Novak Djokovic, by beating the Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2.

The first to take the field will be Cerúndolo, who achieved a great triumph against the American Taylor Fritz and already has a place among the best 20 in the world almost assured. His rival will be the Danish Holger Rune, one of the great promises of the circuit who, at only 20 years old, is already installed in the top 10 and even won a Masters 1000 tournament last year. The match will be at the Suzanne Lenglen, the second most important stadium at Roland Garros, after the duel between the Brazilian Haddad Maia and the Spanish Sorribes Tormo, which will begin at 6 in the morning.

During 2023, Cerúndolo obtained very good results (twice a quarterfinalist in Masters 1000 tournaments, a finalist in Lyon and several wins against elite players) and he does not stop rising in the ranking, with the second half of the year to continue climbing. The winner of the match will play in the quarterfinals against the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud and Chilean Nicolás Jarry.

Later, not before 10:30 and also in Suzanne Lenglen, the other Argentine in the race, Tomás Etcheverry, will play against the Japanese Yoshihito Noshioka (27th seed). Etcheverry, who has been sweeping this Roland Garros, did not give any of his rivals a chance. In the first round, he benefited from the withdrawal of the British Jack Draper in the second set, while in the second and third rounds he easily beat the Australian Alex de Minaur and the Croatian Borna Coric (seeded 18th and 15th respectively) in straight sets.

So far in 2023, Etcheverry was one of the fastest growing tennis players on the circuit. He reached two ATP finals, secured entry into the top 40 rankings, and is the 22nd player with the most accumulated points since the start of the year. The winner will face the German Alexander Zverev or the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
