Recommendations to YouTube to take action against false, misleading information

Fact-checking agencies around the world have urged video-streaming website YouTube to take action on their platform to monitor fake information.

In a letter sent to YouTube chief Susan Vajseki, the companies offered video platforms to help them with false statements or information.

The letter said that in countries where English is not spoken, problems are more prevalent.

“Every day we see that the YouTube platform is being used to spread false and misleading information around the world,” he said.

He also said that such videos do not appear on the radar to check for misinformation, especially in countries where English is not the local language.

“We urge that effective action be taken against fake and inaccurate information and that this be done with the help of independent organizations around the world,” he said.

At the same time, it has been suggested by these institutions to focus on providing context and offering debunk.

It also stressed the need to ensure that its proposed algorithm does not actively promote misinformation to its users.
