Rakhi was born on August 15, 1947 in Ranaghat, Nadia district of Bengal. He belongs to a Bengali family. Rakhi made arrangements with Bengali director and journalist Ajay Biswas at a young age, but the marriage broke up within two years. After the breakup of the marriage, Rakhi began to focus on her film career. His first film name was Badhu Baran which was a Bengali film.
After this, Rakhi entered Bollywood and worked in many successful movies with big stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor. During this time he met the famous lyricist Gulzar. In 1973, the two married and established their home. Rakhi added the name Gulzar to her family name and came to be known as Rakhi Gulzar. After a year of marriage, the two became the parents of a daughter, whom they named Meghna.
It was only after Meghna’s birth that there was a break in their relationship. According to media reports, Rakhi wanted to work in movies, but Gulzar did not want to.
