Sunday brought an unexpected twist for the national team. Star forward Rafael Leão has been released from duty, meaning he won’t be on the pitch for Tuesday’s clash with Hungary, set for a 7:45 PM kick-off. This news broke just hours after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) reported Leão had skipped training. Interestingly, central defender Gonçalo Inácio also missed that session. Soon after, the FPF confirmed Leão’s departure. He’s already made his way back to Italy.
National Coach Roberto Martínez made the call to send Leão home. His decision came after a careful look at the player’s physical shape. It’s a noticeable shift, especially since Leão played a part in yesterday’s victory against Ireland. He entered the game in the 61st minute, showing his usual spark. But clearly, something in his condition prompted the coach to prioritize his well-being and, by extension, the team’s long-term health.
