Iranian police fired tear gas to disperse a protest in the Kurdish-majority western city of Sanandaj, where hundreds of people were denouncing the death of a young woman last week while in police custody in Tehran, according to reports.
The case of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested on Tuesday after the so-called Iranian “morality police” considered that she was not wearing a proper head covering, has sparked public outrage in the country, mainly on social media.
Police said he had died of a heart attack and denied any allegations of torture or abuse.
Police also detained several of the approximately 500 people gathered Sunday in Azadi Square in Sanandaj, the capital of Iran’s Kurdistan province, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
