Proposes law to establish 21-day paternity leave

Propone ley para establecer licencia de paternidad de 21 días

The deputy for the National District, Jose Horacio Rodríguez, introduced a bill that establishes a paternity leave of 21 working daysstating that this initiative seeks to strengthen the family by promoting the presence of parents in the home before the arrival of a new son or daughter.

In a note the proponent explains that the project aims to expand the rights of male and female workers, establishing a paternity leave of 21 working days and extending maternity leave by two weeks to comply with the minimum international standards set by the International Labor Organization (ILO).

If this law is approved, it will have a favorable impact on workers in the maternity and paternity process in both public and private companies. The Dominican Republic would become the 15th country in the region to grant this type of license.

Rodriguez said that the country recognizes the importance of the issue, which is reflected in the fact that without a law, many private companies and public institutions have adopted similar measures on their own initiative.

However, he indicated thate requires a common legal framework so that this necessary period at home is guaranteed as a right in favor of all parents and all the families of the country.

The Democratic Option deputy stated that it is necessary to adopt measures like this one that seek the strengthening and integral development of the Dominican family, to achieve shared, responsible parenthood and maternity in which both the mother and the father can assume their important roles for society.

In addition to José Horacio Rodríguez, the initiative has the support of Deputy Pedro Martinez and Deputy Aidee Lopez.
