Pope Francis expressed his desire that the World Cup in Qatar 2022 “be an occasion for meeting and harmony between Nations”, in the midst of the development of the highest soccer event.
“I would like to send my greetings to the players, the fans and the spectators who are following the World Cup that is taking place in Qatar from various continents,” the Pope’s official account published on the social network Twitter. “May this important event be an occasion for meeting and harmony among nations, fostering brotherhood and peace among peoples.”
In this way, the Supreme Pontiff referred to the World Cup but avoided talking about the criticism aroused by the choice of Qatar as the host country.
However, during his recent trip to Bahrain, Francis called for the promotion of “fair and increasingly better rights and conditions for workers, women and youth throughout the Persian Gulf region, while guaranteeing respect and care for who suffer greater marginalization in society, such as those who have emigrated and prisoners”.
