Peruvian prosecutor requests videos of meetings of President Castillo in the electoral campaign

The Peruvian prosecutor’s office requested on Tuesday videos of meetings of the Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, in a house where he stayed during his electoral campaign in Lima, as part of an investigation of alleged irregularities in a state bidding process.

The officials arrived at the house in the Breña district of Lima, where Castillo would have held meetings with various people and businessmen on November 19, 2021.

The team of prosecutors delivered notifications and requested the unedited images from the security cameras, on the date where Castillo would have held meetings.

The operation was carried out as part of the investigations into the public tender for the construction of a vehicular bridge over the Huallaga river, in the San Martín region, north of Peru, for an amount of 232,587,014 million soles (about 58, 1 million dollars).

Castillo is accused of allegedly having "intervened – unduly and indirectly -" in the process.

But the investigation was suspended until Castillo completes his five-year term, in 2026, since the president has "absolute immunity that transcends the criminal procedural field" in Peru.

In the case, the businesswoman Karelim López and Bruno Pacheco, former secretary general of the Government Palace, would be involved.

Castillo, in power since July 28, narrowly defeated right-wing Keiko Fujimori in a ballot.
