Pelayo finally smiles:

Pelayo Sánchez (22 years old) recovers his smile. Still very young runner, one of the most followed bets close to Burgos BH, had a very difficult 2022. Mononucleosis took a good part of the bike away from him and in fact his season ended in mid-August. Since then, he began a long winter: “I overcame that infection that left me weighed down and I came to doubt. They were almost five months away until the start of the year, and in training I felt good, but it remained to be seen when it came to competing”. And the doubts were dispelled in Mallorca, where he came to sign a second place in the Andratx Trophy under the storm: “I prefer good weather, but if it’s cold, it rains better.”

He debuted in La Vuelta in 2021, his first year as a professional: “Disputing it in your beginnings is like doing ‘the military’. She had never competed more than four days in a row, and suddenly she had to do 21. It was a nice experience, which helped me improve, and I hope the team receives an invitation to this year’s edition”. This week he played the Tour of Oman, letting himself be seen, and helping teammates like Langellotti. “I have to focus on the medium and high mountains. It is time to see what route I can have ”, the Asturian told AS, a runner who likes “short and explosive” arrivals.

Lover of the motor, nature, and fishing, to disconnect sometimes he goes in his SUV to make routes through the mountains and, although he could not see in life, He has a reference: “My favorite runner, even though I didn’t get to see him compete, is El Tarangu (José Manuel Fuente)”. He died in 1996 and achieved 21 victories, including two generals in La Vuelta (1972 and 1974), nine stages in the Tour and two in the Giro. All this in just seven seasons that he competed. “They talk to me a lot about him and I would like to repeat his feats, with that epic cycling, and be in the best races in the world”. He chases his first professional victory: “We are not like to choose a place to get (between laughs), but hopefully it will be in Asturias. Would be a dream”. He will go to the Volta a Catalunya, to Itzulia… and then to the Vuelta de casa, the one in Asturias (at the end of April), the one in which he dreams of debuting his record.
