Pakistan handed over 33 suspects to the army

Civilian authorities have handed over at least 33 people to the military for trial on suspicion of attacking army installations during violent protests following the arrest of Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah reported this on Friday. Dawn’s news

In a press conference in Islamabad, Sanaullah said that only 19 people in Punjab and 14 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been handed over to military courts or army officials. Of the 499 persons against whom the FIRs have been filed, only six have completed the legal process. Among them two are from Punjab and four are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They may be tried in a military court.

But the situation has been created as if they are all being tried in a military court, the minister added.

The army termed the violence as a dark chapter. They announced that those involved in the violence would be prosecuted under two military laws, the Pakistan Armed Forces Act and the State Secrets Act.
