Padres bet on stratospheric payroll to take NL West away from Dodgers

MLB Opening Day is underway and the projections for the end of the 2023 season are necessary at this time. Padres look to compete with Los Angeles Dodgers for NL West title and for this they have assembled the third most expensive squad in the Major Leagues.

Since 2006, the San Diego team has not won their division. However, they believe that 2023 is a year in which it could achieve it based on spending too much on free agents and contract extensions.

According to Spotrac, the ‘Friars’ will have a payroll of 236.9 million dollars in the 2023 seasonbehind only the 335.9 for the New York Mets and the 268.9 for the New York Yankees.

The Padres have shone for the contracts of third baseman Manny Machado (11 years, 350 million dollars), shortstop Xander Bogaerts (11 years and 280 million) and pitcher Yu Darvish (six seasons for 108 million).
