Omicron’s sub-variant spreads faster than original variant: Research

A subvariant of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is more infectious than its parent variant. This has been claimed in a new research conducted in Denmark. Researchers led by the Statens Serum Institute (SSI) analyzed the prevalence of Omicron’s basic variant (ba.1) and subvariate (ba.2) among 1,7945 people in 8541 households. They found that the BA.2 variant engulfed people with a firepower of 39 percent, compared to 29 percent in the case of the BA.1. This is also believed to be the main reason for BA.2 to infect more people in less time.

The SSI researchers also found that people who were not vaccinated were significantly more likely to be infected with BA.1 and BA.2 than those who had been fully vaccinated or had received a booster dose. However, the study has yet to be reviewed. It has been shown that those patients infected with BA.2 have a higher risk of becoming carriers of the virus than others who have not received a single dose of anti-Covid vaccine. The research team also included researchers from the University of Copenhagen, Statistics Denmark and the Technical University of Denmark.
