“Ocean Viking”: there are “no more migrants in the waiting area”, assures the Var prefecture

There are no more migrants in Giens (Var). All the survivors of theocean viking have now left the site, assured the Var prefecture, confirming information from RTL. “The waiting area no longer exists when no one is locked in there”said Laure Palun, director of Anafé (National Association for Border Assistance for Foreigners), who intervened there for several days.

L’ocean viking, a humanitarian ship chartered by SOS Méditerranée, docked in Toulon 13 days ago with 230 migrants on board who were immediately locked up in an international “waiting area” created in a holiday center on the peninsula of Gians. A large part of them had been quickly released, either by court order, or because they were unaccompanied minors, or because they had been granted entry into the territory for asylum after interviews with the Office French for the protection of refugees and stateless persons.

The government has said it wants to draw conclusions from this episode by a new legislative turn of the screw with the next immigration law. The right “is not necessarily suitable for this situation”Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Tuesday. “We must change the law and that is precisely what we are going to do in the immigration law” proposed by the government, he assured. This draft text must be the subject of a parliamentary debate on December 6 and 13 before an official presentation in early January 2023.
