OAS extends mandate of mission to support peace in Colombia

Colombia and the Organization of American States renewed the mandate of the Mission to Support the Colombian Peace Process (MAPP / OEA) for three more years, Colombian President Iván Duque and OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro announced on Tuesday .

“Thank you very much for renewing confidence in MAPP / OEA, peace with legality is an objective and our support for that vision that you have,” Almagro said in a joint statement with President Duque in Washington. “MAPP’s work has been fundamental in the field … in key tasks from disarmament to access to rights,” he added.

The mission’s mandate was about to end in December of this year. It is an agreement between Colombia and the OAS that began in 2004 and has been extended seven times. Its function is to accompany Colombia’s efforts to seek peace and the mission is in charge of verifying the ceasefire and hostilities, demobilization, disarmament and reintegration.

Since 2016, MAPP has been monitoring the implementation of the peace agreement signed between the Colombian State and the defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), taking advantage of its extensive presence in Colombian territory with 18 regional offices.

“For Colombia, it is strategic, relevant and highly representative of multilateral institutions to have the MAPP / OEA and extend its mandate over time … Colombia continues to advance contributions so that this mission has a successful effort on a permanent basis,” said Duque. , who fulfills a work schedule in the United States.
